The Japanese Government scholarships (The Ministry of Education, culture, sports, science and Technology) MEXT are awarded to International students who want to study at Universities in Japan.
Types of Japanese Government Scholarships
The Japanese government scholarships are grouped into six (6) categories. Each category has its own requirements.
1) Research students
Applicants applying under this category should be under 35 years
Should be a college graduate, prospective graduates or you must have completed 16 years of schooling.
Duration of studies: maximum of two years including Japanese language training (6 months)
Field of study: major field of study in your specialty
Nationality: worldwide, 168 countries and regions
Planned of new scholarships: 4042 people
2) Teacher training students
Should be under 35 years of age
Duration of studies: 1 year 6 months including Japanese language (6 months)
Nationality: Developing countries, 64 countries
Field of study: Teacher training department
Planned of new scholarships: 89 people
3) Undergraduate university students
must be 17 years or under 22 years of age
Duration of study: 5 years
Nationality: worldwide 100 countries
Field of study: all undergraduate programs
Planned of New scholarships: 460 people
4) Japanese studies students
Applicants must be from 18 to 30 years old.
Duration of study: 1 year
Nationality: 74 countries and regions
Field of study: Japanese Language studies
Planned number of scholarships: 190 people
5) College of technology students
You must be at least 17 and under 22 years of age
Duration of study: 4 years including Japanese language training
Nationality: Developing countries, 40 countries
Planned number of scholarships: 86 people
Special training college student
You must be at least 17 and under 22 years of age
Duration of study: 3 years including Japanese language training (1 year)
Nationality: Developing countries, (49 countries and regions)
Planned number of scholarships: 90 people
Scholarship Value
Tuition fee waiver
Paid by the The Ministry of Education, culture, sports, science and Technology.
Monthly stipend
- 143,000 yen per month to 148,000 yen per month for Graduates
- 117,000 yen per month to 120,000 yen per month for undergraduates and others
