FIU Medical School Requirements – Academic and Admission

FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine (HWCOM) was formed in 2006. It is located at Modesto, Miami, Florida in the United States. Check the “FIU Medical School Requirements” to see if you are eligible to apply.

It is the medical school of Florida International University. The medical school was inaugurated with 43 students in 2009. It ranks 5th for the best medical schools in Florida.

FIU medical school was named after Herbert Wertheim  when he donated $20 million to the college.

FIU Medical School Requirements -Academic Requirements

  • Applicant should be a permanent resident or citizen of the United States

The FIU medical school is not accepting international students as at now. The medical school is only admitting  permanent resident or citizen of the United States.

  • By the matriculation time, all applicants should have a bachelors degree.

All applicants must have completed a bachelors program before they can apply for FIU medical school programs.  Applicants who receive their bachelors degree out the United States should write the prerequisite courses at an accredited institution in USA.

First of all, HWCOM requires all applicants to have a good proficiency in English. Applicants should complete the following courses;

  1. General Biology with laboratory – 2 semesters
  2. Mathematics – 2 semesters
  3. College English – 2 semesters
  4. Physics with laboratory – 2 semesters
  5. Organic Chemistry with laboratory (or Organic Chemistry 1 & 2 or Organic Chemistry 1 and Biochemistry is accepted) – 2 semesters
  6. General Chemistry with laboratory – 2 semesters
  • Applicants must have written the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT)

Aside the prerequisite courses, applicants must written the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT).

Programs offered by FIU medical school

Doctor of Medicine (MD)

The Doctor of Medicine (MD) at HWCOM is a four (4) year program which provide medical training to students. It prepares students into the postgraduate studies. Students will receive MD degree after the 4 years studies.

Master in Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS)

The program is based on major principles of anatomy, pathophysiology, physiology, microbiology, pharmacology.

Certificate in Molecular and Biomedical Sciences

Courses that will be covered are Medical Molecular Biology, Professional Skills in Medical Sciences, Medical Cell Biology and Biochemistry and Medical Microbiology and Immunology.

PhD Program in Biomedical Sciences

The PhD program is a continuation on the Master in Biomedical Sciences
